My intention is not to write this as a woe is me, attention seeking blog. If I wanted all that, I would have put it on facebook. My intention is to have it here as a record for the future... in the hope that I won't need it.
Yesterday, at about 1:00 I was doing laundry. I'd gone downstairs and put a load in the washer, then came back to the top of the stairs to throw down all the clothes my kids had left there. As I was standing there tossing things down, I felt the strangest sensation come over my body. I could see out of the corner of my eye that my index finger was tapping the door jamb I was holding, but I couldn't feel it or hear it tapping. I could see that I was moving things, holding clothes, and throwing them, but I couldn't FEEL it, I couldn't HEAR them hitting the bottom. I picked up a few fallen gift bags and saw trails when I moved them. That's when I decided to stop moving and just be still. Al came looking for me (bless him) and I explained what I was feeling. He suggested I get an Ativan, thinking I was having a weird panic attack (but not really believing that). So, I tried that, but it didn't change my symptoms at all. I tried to just work through it, and decided to take out the recycling. But my walking was so strange. Al says I looked drunk. I was stumbling, shuffling, and dropping things without really realizing it. I gave up on pretending it was going away, and went to sit on the couch. Which is when the right side of my face, my right arm, and the top of my right leg started to tingle. A headache also started, and I felt a pressure in my nose like I was going to have a nose bleed. My speech was fine, although quiet and it was hard for me to get the words out. And my thumb on my left hand started twitching all on its own. I was terrified at this point. But I didn't want my kids to notice, so I just sat as still as I could and prayed that it would all go away. Mason came over to me, and put his hand on my leg, and it felt like fire. My knee was touching a book and the pain from it was horrid. It took me about a full minute to get Al to hear me that I needed the book moved. Once the book was moved, and I was able to sit quiet for about 10 minutes, the buzzing in my body seemed to subside a little. And during this time Al was also able to convince me that I needed to get to the ER. (I'm stubborn... and I was terrified of scaring the kids, since I knew no one was around to take them for us.) So, off we went. Al dropped me off and took the kids shopping.
At the hospital the nurse in triage assured me that she thought I was fine. And suggested that perhaps it was a migraine. But was still concerned about the numbness/tingling in my face, arm and leg... that hadn't changed at all. So, they immediately did a blood test to rule out Stroke (I know, I was thinking it too... that's why I was there), and I was taken back to a bed pretty quickly (might be coincidence, I don't know, but I have NEVER been through the ER as fast as that!). They then did a urine test, and an EKG... both were normal (Good!). In came Dr. McHotness (OMG!! Why didn't I brush my hair better!? Shave my legs better? LOL). He said he didn't really understand what was going on. And said that at that time, it did Not appear as though I had had a stroke. But that he couldn't really pin point what Did happen. He did a few neurological tests (finger to the nose, hand to hand, follow the finger with my eyes stuff), and I passed all of that.
So, the final verdict is that I probably had a migraine. I am still feeling really tired, and there's still a dull ache in my head, and my cheek is still numb... but I am just thanking God that it wasn't more serious. And I am thanking my husband for his care and concern. There's nothing like a scare like that to realize what you have, and hold it closer.
